Statement on Canada's Withdrawal from U.S. Trade Negotiations
At moments like this, Canada must speak with one voice.
As Nova Scotians, we must stand with the rest of Canada. Prime Minister Mark Carney was right to walk away from a U.S. trade deal that was not in Canada’s interests. He put it plainly: "They asked too much and offered too little."
A deal signed under the threat of tariffs and subject to bad-faith last-minute demands would have cost us more than no deal at all. It would also have signalled to Washington that pressure works.
The United States has imposed new, harmful tariffs; matching them dollar for dollar is the right response. Nova Scotians will feel the effects, and our provincial government must ensure that the supports for the people and organizations who are impacted move as quickly as the tariffs do.
At moments like this, Canada must speak with one voice. We didn't choose this fight but we're in it - and we're in it together.
